Yerba Maté Teas

About Yerba Maté Teas

Like tea, Yerba Maté is a drink made from dried leaves and young stems infused in hot water and is  native to the South American countries of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. The plant (Ilex paraguariensis) is an evergreen and both grows wild and is cultivated on Maté plantations.

Yerba Maté is popular in many countries in South America and is slowly attracting an appreciation around the rest of the world. Similar to tea, Maté is a healthful alternative to coffee providing a stimulating energy without the jittery edge associated with coffee. Yerba Maté also has natural antioxidant polyphenols, immune system supporting saponins and a range of healthy vitamins and minerals.

Because it is not a tea, many tea companies include Yerba Maté in their listing of herbal or botanical "teas" or tisanes. Unlike most herbal teas which are usually caffeine-free, Yerba Maté contains a compound similar to caffeine (known as “Matteine”) which is responsible for its' uplifting energy. Accordingly, we have put Yerba Maté in it's own category to eliminate any confusion for those customers who may have a caffeine sensitivity and are trying to avoid caffeine.

Our Yerba Maté is organically grown and is a renewable rain forest product. Through the efforts and promotion of Yerba Maté to a wider audience by many socially conscious tea companies, cultivating Maté provides a viable alternative income source to destructive logging and cattle ranching in the Amazon.
