The signature ingredient in this chai blend is the ramon nut, "Brosimum alicastrum" (also called breadnut or Maya nut) which was planted and cultivated by the Mayan civilization 2,000 years ago. This rich roasted ramon nut from Central America adds a rich mocha note to the traditional chai spices. The ramon nut is extremely high in fiber, calcium, potassium, folic acid, iron, zinc, protein and vitamins A, E, C and B.
This chai drink has a unique flavor that will be especially appealing to coffee and cocoa lovers as well as chai tea drinkers. The added bold, richness of the ramon nut creates a very flavorful chai and excels where the taste of most decaf coffees disappoint. Enjoy all the healthy benefits along with the distinctive chai spice accents as a hot or iced beverage.
Heat water (filtered if possible) to a boil and let cool slightly before adding one tablespoon of loose tea per cup (apprx. 8 ounces). Infuse for 5 minutes depending on taste preference. Tastes best with added milk and sweetner according to your preference.
Want to try a more traditional way of preparing your Mayan Chai? Take 1 tablespoon of loose leaf chai blend, plus a 1/2 cup of milk, 3/4 of cup of water, and 1.5 tablespoons of sweetner and add to a small sauce pan. (For more than one serving multiply the ingredients by the number of servings). Bring the chai and liquids to a boil, reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for five minutes. Strain the heated chai tea into serving cups and enjoy!
